NYK launches first of its eight biggest box ships

NYK has received the first of eight of its newly-built 8,600-TEU containerships, the NYK Vega, from South Korea's Ulsan Shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The NYK Vega is one of four ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries. Four more are coming from IHI Marine United of Japan, said an NYK statement.

The NYK Vega, the largest containership in NYK's fleet, will help NYK respond to expanding demand, mainly from China, as well as enhance the company's cost-competitiveness. All eight ships will be built by early 2008 and assigned to the European route.

The introduction of a new engine allows for optimal combustion efficiency due to an electrically controlled system that controls the timing of fuel injection and the opening and shutting of the exhaust valves.

Improved combustion efficiency due to the maintenance of a high level of fuel injection pressure even in the low-load range helps reduce fuel consumption as well as reduce the generation of NOx, soot, and smoke by 13 per cent, a significant decrease compared to the earlier containerships, the company said.
